About OneStart

OneStart is a web portal application presenting a single front door to online services at Indiana University. For example, a student can use OneStart to register for classes, view their transcript, search the library, view job postings, and access webmail. A staff member can use OneStart to access their email and calendar, view institutional reports, and purchase a parking sticker. OneStart provides easier and more direct access to the multitude of services available for students, faculty, and staff at Indiana University.

OneStart seeks to make IU services as accessible, effective, and comprehensive as possible. The OneStart project team hopes to provide a completely user-centered environment offering easy access to a wide array of services and information with the intent of developing life-long campus citizens of Indiana University. While a number of services exist today, OneStart is still growing. The OneStart project team intends to continue to enhance the number of services and the integration of these services. OneStart will continue to evolve as needs change and technological improvements are made.

Here are just a few of the ways OneStart will make it easier for people at IU to find and use the services they need:

  • User Personalization OneStart provides many opportunities for the user to personalize their pages by adding their own personal favorite web services. For example, web services like Internet utilities, news, entertainment, and gaming sites can be added to the users' own, personal OneStart pages.

  • Single sign-on - OneStart's goal is for every user to sign on just one time to get to all of the services they need.

  • Role-based filtering - The large list of online services available to each OneStart user is filtered based upon the role or combination of roles the user has at IU. For example, a faculty member at the IUPUI campus will see a different set of services than a student at IUB. This allows OneStart users to get immediately to the services of interest to them.

  • Electronic document routing - The OneStart environment will contain integrated workflow facilitating the routing and approval of electronic documents. Imagine being able to electronically complete, process, and finalize documents that have historically required filling out and manually routing paper forms.

  • Virtual community - OneStart provides opportunity for sharing information, collaborative research, informed decision-making, and organizing social events.

The goal of OneStart is to provide a user-centered environment offering easy access to a wide array of services and information. How can you help? OneStart is a university project. In order for OneStart to be a success, IU must establish an environment of shared ownership and vision among the OneStart community of users. It is the users of OneStart that will drive the priorities for future services and releases. The goal of OneStart is to create a virtual community for IU—a place to study, work, explore, collaborate, and have fun!
